2 Kings

2 Kings – Chapter 1

 

1:1 Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

1:2 Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper room that was in Samaria, and was sick. So he sent messengers, and said to them, “Go, inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this sickness.”

1:3 But the LORD’s angel said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and tell them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you go to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron?

1:4 Now therefore the LORD says, “You will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.”’” Then Elijah departed.

1:5 The messengers returned to him, and he said to them, “Why is it that you have returned?”

1:6 They said to him, “A man came up to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and tell him, “The LORD says, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you send to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’”’”

1:7 He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came up to meet you and told you these words?”

1:8 They answered him, “He was a hairy man, and wearing a leather belt around his waist.” He said, “It’s Elijah the Tishbite.”

1:9 Then the king sent a captain of fifty with his fifty to him. He went up to him; and behold, he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down!’”

1:10 Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty!” Then fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.

1:11 Again he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He answered him, “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down quickly!’”

1:12 Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty!” Then God’s fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.

1:13 Again he sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. The third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, and said to him, “Man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty of your servants be precious in your sight.

1:14 Behold, fire came down from the sky and consumed the last two captains of fifty with their fifties. But now let my life be precious in your sight.”

1:15 The LORD’s angel said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Don’t be afraid of him.” Then he arose and went down with him to the king.

1:16 He said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’”

1:17 So he died according to the LORD’s word which Elijah had spoken. Jehoram began to reign in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, because he had no son.

1:18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

1 Kings – Chapter 1

 

1:1 Now King David was old and advanced in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn’t keep warm.

1:2 Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young virgin be sought for my lord the king. Let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”

1:3 So they sought for a beautiful young lady throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

1:4 The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and served him; but the king didn’t know her intimately.

1:5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

1:6 His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, “Why have you done so?” and he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom.

1:7 He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.

1:8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

1:9 Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;

1:10 but he didn’t call Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.

1:11 Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Haven’t you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn’t know it?

1:12 Now therefore come, please let me give you counsel, that you may save your own life and your son Solomon’s life.

1:13 Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’

1:14 Behold, while you are still talking there with the king, I will also come in after you and confirm your words.”

1:15 Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.

1:16 Bathsheba bowed and showed respect to the king. The king said, “What would you like?”

1:17 She said to him, “My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’

1:18 Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don’t know it.

1:19 He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.

1:20 You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

1:21 Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered criminals.”

1:22 Behold, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.

1:23 They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

1:24 Nathan said, “My lord, King, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?

1:25 For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

1:26 But he hasn’t called me, even me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.

1:27 Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

1:28 Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.

1:29 The king vowed and said, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

1:30 most certainly as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”

1:31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and showed respect to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”

1:32 King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king.

1:33 The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.

1:34 Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’

1:35 Then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne; for he shall be king in my place. I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.”

1:36 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, “Amen. May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.

1:37 As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”

1:38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.

1:39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”

1:40 All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with their sound.

1:41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they had finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”

1:42 While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”

1:43 Jonathan answered Adonijah, “Most certainly our lord King David has made Solomon king.

1:44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king’s mule.

1:45 Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.

1:46 Also, Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.

1:47 Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the bed.

1:48 Also thus said the king, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes even seeing it.’”

1:49 All the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and each man went his way.

1:50 Adonijah was afraid because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and hung onto the horns of the altar.

1:51 Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’”

1:52 Solomon said, “If he shows himself a worthy man, not a hair of his shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.”

1:53 So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

Judges

Judges – Chapter 1

 

1:1 After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of the LORD, saying, “Who should go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”

1:2 The LORD said, “Judah shall go up. Behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”

1:3 Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your lot.” So Simeon went with him.

1:4 Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand. They struck ten thousand men in Bezek.

1:5 They found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and they fought against him. They struck the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

1:6 But Adoni-Bezek fled. They pursued him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.

1:7 Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, scavenged under my table. As I have done, so God has done to me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

1:8 The children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, took it, struck it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

1:9 After that, the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, and in the South, and in the lowland.

1:10 Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron. (The name of Hebron before that was Kiriath Arba.) They struck Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.

1:11 From there he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir before that was Kiriath Sepher.)

1:12 Caleb said, “I will give Achsah my daughter as wife to the man who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it.”

1:13 Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it, so he gave him Achsah his daughter as his wife.

1:14 When she came, she got him to ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What would you like?”

1:15 She said to him, “Give me a blessing; because you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water.” Then Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

1:16 The children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.

1:17 Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah.

1:18 Also Judah took Gaza with its border, and Ashkelon with its border, and Ekron with its border.

1:19 The LORD was with Judah, and drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

1:20 They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of there.

1:21 The children of Benjamin didn’t drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem, but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

1:22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.

1:23 The house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city before that was Luz.)

1:24 The watchers saw a man come out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”

1:25 He showed them the entrance into the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go.

1:26 The man went into the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.

1:27 Manasseh didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

1:28 When Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

1:29 Ephraim didn’t drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, but the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

1:30 Zebulun didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor.

1:31 Asher didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

1:32 but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they didn’t drive them out.

1:33 Naphtali didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but he lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became subject to forced labor.

1:34 The Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;

1:35 but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. Yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.

1:36 The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

Joshua

Joshua – Chapter 1

 

1:1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying,

1:2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go across this Jordan, you and all these people, to the land which I am giving to them, even to the children of Israel.

1:3 I have given you every place that the sole of your foot will tread on, as I told Moses.

1:4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.

1:5 No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

1:6 “Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

1:7 Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

1:8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.

1:9 Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

1:10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

1:11 “Pass through the middle of the camp, and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare food; for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess.’”

1:12 Joshua spoke to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, saying,

1:13 “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, ‘The LORD your God gives you rest, and will give you this land.

1:14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall live in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but you shall pass over before your brothers armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them

1:15 until the LORD has given your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they have also possessed the land which the LORD your God gives them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and possess it, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.’”

1:16 They answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.

1:17 Just as we listened to Moses in all things, so will we listen to you. Only may the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses.

1:18 Whoever rebels against your commandment, and doesn’t listen to your words in all that you command him shall himself be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy – Chapter 1

 

1:1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

1:2 It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.

1:3 In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the LORD had given him in commandment to them,

1:4 after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.

1:5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,

1:6 “The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.

1:7 Turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the places near there: in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the lowland, in the South, by the seashore, in the land of the Canaanites, and in Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

1:8 Behold, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—to give to them and to their offspring after them.’”

1:9 I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I am not able to bear you myself alone.

1:10 The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.

1:11 May the LORD, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!

1:12 How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?

1:13 Take wise men of understanding who are respected among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”

1:14 You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”

1:15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and respected men, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

1:16 I commanded your judges at that time, saying, “Hear cases between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.

1:17 You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.”

1:18 I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

1:19 We traveled from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.

1:20 I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God gives to us.

1:21 Behold, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the LORD the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

1:22 You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let’s send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”

1:23 The thing pleased me well. I took twelve of your men, one man for every tribe.

1:24 They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

1:25 They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, “It is a good land which the LORD our God gives to us.”

1:26 Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God.

1:27 You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because the LORD hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

1:28 Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”

1:29 Then I said to you, “Don’t be terrified. Don’t be afraid of them.

1:30 The LORD your God, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

1:31 and in the wilderness where you have seen how that the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”

1:32 Yet in this thing you didn’t believe the LORD your God,

1:33 who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in: in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

1:34 The LORD heard the voice of your words and was angry, and swore, saying,

1:35 “Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,

1:36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD.”

1:37 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, “You also shall not go in there.

1:38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

1:39 Moreover your little ones, whom you said would be captured or killed, your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, shall go in there. I will give it to them, and they shall possess it.

1:40 But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

1:41 Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

1:42 The LORD said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up and don’t fight; for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.’”

1:43 So I spoke to you, and you didn’t listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.

1:44 The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

1:45 You returned and wept before the LORD, but the LORD didn’t listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you.

1:46 So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.

Numbers

Numbers – Chapter 1

 

1:1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

1:2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, one by one,

1:3 from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall count them by their divisions.

1:4 With you there shall be a man of every tribe, each one head of his fathers’ house.

1:5 These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur.

1:6 Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

1:7 Of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

1:8 Of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar.

1:9 Of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon.

1:10 Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

1:11 Of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni.

1:12 Of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

1:15 Of Naphtali: Ahira the son of Enan.”

1:16 These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

1:17 Moses and Aaron took these men who are mentioned by name.

1:18 They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their ancestry by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, one by one.

1:19 As the LORD commanded Moses, so he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.

1:20 The children of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:21 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.

1:22 Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those who were counted of it, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:23 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

1:24 Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:25 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.

1:26 Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:27 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.

1:28 Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:29 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

1:30 Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:31 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

1:32 Of the children of Joseph: of the children of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:33 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred.

1:34 Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:35 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

1:36 Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:37 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.

1:38 Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:39 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

1:40 Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:41 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand five hundred.

1:42 Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

1:43 those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

1:44 These are those who were counted, whom Moses and Aaron counted, and the twelve men who were princes of Israel, each one for his fathers’ house.

1:45 So all those who were counted of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel—

1:46 all those who were counted were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.

1:47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not counted among them.

1:48 For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

1:49 “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, neither shall you take a census of them among the children of Israel;

1:50 but appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it.

1:51 When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.

1:52 The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their divisions.

1:53 But the Levites shall encamp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel. The Levites shall be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”

1:54 Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they did.

Leviticus – Chapter 1

 

1:1 The LORD called to Moses, and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying,

1:2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When anyone of you offers an offering to the LORD, you shall offer your offering of the livestock, from the herd and from the flock.

1:3 “‘If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without defect. He shall offer it at the door of the Tent of Meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD.

1:4 He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

1:5 He shall kill the bull before the LORD. Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall present the blood and sprinkle the blood around on the altar that is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

1:6 He shall skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.

1:7 The sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire on the altar, and lay wood in order on the fire;

1:8 and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall lay the pieces, the head, and the fat in order on the wood that is on the fire which is on the altar;

1:9 but he shall wash its innards and its legs with water. The priest shall burn all of it on the altar, for a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to the LORD.

1:10 “‘If his offering is from the flock, from the sheep or from the goats, for a burnt offering, he shall offer a male without defect.

1:11 He shall kill it on the north side of the altar before the LORD. Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar.

1:12 He shall cut it into its pieces, with its head and its fat. The priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is on the altar,

1:13 but the innards and the legs he shall wash with water. The priest shall offer the whole, and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to the LORD.

1:14 “‘If his offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, then he shall offer his offering from turtledoves or of young pigeons.

1:15 The priest shall bring it to the altar, and wring off its head, and burn it on the altar; and its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar;

1:16 and he shall take away its crop and its feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, in the place of the ashes.

1:17 He shall tear it by its wings, but shall not divide it apart. The priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to the LORD.

Exodus – Chapter 1

 

1:1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):

1:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

1:3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

1:4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

1:5 All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

1:6 Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.

1:7 The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

1:8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

1:9 He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

1:10 Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

1:11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

1:12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.

1:13 The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,

1:14 and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

1:15 The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,

1:16 and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

1:17 But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

1:18 The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”

1:19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

1:20 God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

1:21 Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

1:22 Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Genesis – Chapter 1

 

1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

1:2 The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

1:3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

1:4 God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness.

1:5 God called the light “day”, and the darkness he called “night”. There was evening and there was morning, the first day.

1:6 God said, “Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”

1:7 God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.

1:8 God called the expanse “sky”. There was evening and there was morning, a second day.

1:9 God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear;” and it was so.

1:10 God called the dry land “earth”, and the gathering together of the waters he called “seas”. God saw that it was good.

1:11 God said, “Let the earth yield grass, herbs yielding seeds, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with their seeds in it, on the earth;” and it was so.

1:12 The earth yielded grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with their seeds in it, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

1:13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

1:14 God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs to mark seasons, days, and years;

1:15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth;” and it was so.

1:16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars.

1:17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth,

1:18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good.

1:19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

1:20 God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.”

1:21 God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good.

1:22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

1:23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

1:24 God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so.

1:25 God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.

1:26 God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

1:27 God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

1:28 God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

1:29 God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.

1:30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food;” and it was so.

1:31 God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
